Health-conscious people, including my grandparents, have tried to answer a controversial matter: Which is better, vitamins from supplements vs food.

This video cites an important study indicating that the nutrients from food may be linked to lower risks of death. On the contrary, excess intake of certain supplements, such as the mineral, calcium may have the opposite effect.

There are people who assert that vitamins from supplements can make up for deficient diets. They believe that vitamins (and minerals) from supplements can easily be assimilated in the body where benefits can be attained.

But the truth is that dietary supplements should not and cannot replace complete meals, which are essential to protecting our immune system and natural defenses.

However, this is not to suggest that all supplements should be avoided. Pregnant women are often advised to take folic acid, and older women may be told to take additional calcium. Other supplements are recommended, depending on the health care issue that has to be addressed.

It is imperative to speak with your healthcare provider before making the decision about whether to take supplements. The goal is always to achieve a balance between nutrients from food and supplements.

Many supplements also contain active ingredients that may have strong biological effects — favorable or unfavorable. You especially have to be careful about consuming fat-soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin A or Vitamin D, and such vitamins are stored in the body. Moreover, unethical vendors may not actually provide the amount of vitamins indicated on the bottle, and worse, may include toxic substances.

I did not focus on these points in the video because I don’t want to scare folks from taking vitamin supplements. I simply wanted to emphasize the perspective that natural foods are superior to vitamin consumption when the goal is to attain health.
