Video Transcript:
Hey everyone, I’m Dr. Shelly Seidenberg and I want to shed some light on the topic of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is so important that God created our bodies to be able to synthesize it when we’re outside in the sun. As you all know, the world is currently dealing with a new mutation of coronavirus which causes severe respiratory illness.
I want to share with you some important information about Vitamin D, so you can understand how it can help protect your respiratory tract and immune system.
Vitamin D, also known as 25-hydroxyvitamin D, supports the induction of antimicrobial peptides in response to both viral and bacterial stimuli. So what does that mean?
It means that Vitamin D can help your body fight off bacteria and viruses. Meaning that Vitamin D can offer protection against respiratory pathogens such as a coronavirus like COVID-19.
Vitamin D metabolites have also been shown to induce autophagy, which is the process where a cell self-destructs when it is unhealthy. Autophagy is vital to remaining healthy. In fact, it is vital for remaining alive.
If a cell becomes sick, damaged, or mutated and it is unable to self destruct then it will reproduce as another sick, damaged, or mutated cell. If this process continues, there will be hundreds and then thousands of unhealthy cells in your body. This is how cancer develops for example.
Autophagy is the mechanism that prevents this and I’m sure you understand now how important this is.
So what’s the big deal with respiratory issues? Why are they so dangerous especially for the elderly or those with we can immune systems?
Well, acute respiratory tract infections are a major cause of global morbidity and mortality and are responsible for 10% of emergency department visits in the US and an estimated 2.65 million deaths worldwide.
The good news is, like I mentioned already, vitamin D can help prevent respiratory problems.
If you need more convincing keep listening.
There are many studies that show associations between low serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and susceptibility to acute respiratory tract infection.
In 2017, a huge meta-analysis was performed to assess the overall effect of vitamin D supplementation on the risk of acute respiratory tract infection.
The results of the study showed that vitamin D can help prevent acute respiratory tract infections.
The study also showed that people who are very deficient in vitamin D experienced a particular benefit to supplementing with vitamin D.
Go ahead and do a google search for yourself and you’ll see that the evidence is overwhelming.
I take a vitamin d supplement everyday and i highly recommend you do the same.
Please share this video with your friends and family, so we can help keep each other happy and healthy.
If you want information about what brands I recommend or what dose of vitamin D is best for you, reach out to me and I’d be happy to help you. Thanks for watching and I hope you all stay happy and healthy in the upcoming weeks.
