Coronavirus outbreak: Dr. Fauci talks COVID-19 vaccine, antibody tests, and WH briefings

The U.S. government’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci was interviewed on Tuesday and provided an update on the most frequently asked questions surrounding the novel coronavirus and the state of the world. When will there be a vaccine? When will the U.S. reopen for business as usual? What about antibody tests? Will there be second wave of COVID-19? And, are the daily White House press briefings really worth Fauci’s time?

Dr. Fauci said while the daily White House briefings are an important way to communicate during the “real public health crisis in our country,” he laments that he wishes he could focus more of his efforts on “important process of trying to develop a vaccine, of trying to get monoclonal antibodies.”
During the interview, he cautioned that more research needs to be done before effective novel coronavirus antibody tests can be used. He says the U.S. needs “to get a test that works and that’s reproducible.”

The doctor also said the U.S. does not yet have the critical testing and tracing procedures needed to begin reopening the nation’s economy, adding a dose of caution to increasingly “overly optimistic” May 1 date from the White House.

He also spoke about a possible “second wave” of COVID-19, and how he wouldn’t be surprised if it happened.
