New COVID-19 immunity finger prick tests could speed up border screening process

IDEMIA Oceania Managing Director Xavier Assouad says a finger prick test for COVID-19 immunity could speed up the screening process for international arrivals.

Mr Assouad told Sky News the finger prick test can return results within 15 minutes.

“It allows you to identify those individuals who are at very low risk of transmission because they have such a level of immunity you know they could not be carrying the virus,” he said.

“Their body would just eliminate the infection straight away.

“What it enables you to do is allow these travellers who have this level of immunity back into the community much sooner without quarantine”.

Mr Assouad said the test would allow the government to focus its efforts on those who are at risk of transmitting the virus.

“We want to start with quarantine initially because it’s really where the bottle neck really is at the moment and progressively moving back into the airport,” he told Sky News.

“Probably more on arrivals initially but eventually we intend to have it on departures as well.”
