NUTRITION

Nutrition Across the Life Span (Group 1)

This is a balanced and well diet for a pregnant woman. The rice is a carbohydrate which means it is high in energy and is therefore an important component of a suitable pregnancy diet. The meat is a healthful source of protein which is responsible for building of body tissue and can also be a fuel source. The broccoli contains folate, fiber, calcium, lutein, zeaxanthin, carotenoids to foster healthy vision, and potassium for fluid balance and normal blood pressure; broccoli also contains the raw materials for vitamin A production in the body. Milk for a pregnant woman is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D which are bone-building nutrients for both mother and baby. Lastly, the orange is great for keeping the mother hydrated and healthy. It also has vitamin C which can help prevent cell damage and assist with iron absorption. Folate can help prevent neural tube defects, which can cause brain and spinal cord abnormalities in a baby.
