Summary:
There are only a few foods that contain vitamin D, and this makes it extremely important to be intentional about adding it to your diet. Vitamin D is produced from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to the sun and according to a 2014 article published in PubMed Central, about 1 billion people in the world have low levels of vitamin D in their blood. In another study, it was concluded that in the US alone, 69.2% of Hispanic adults are vitamin D deficient and 82.1% of people of African descent are vitamin D deficient. This means that having darker skin tones could mean less vitamin D levels. The number 1 reason you need vitamin D is that it helps protect you from disease. According to a 2020 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it has been discovered that there is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and having a higher risk for COVID-19. The study noted that 80% of people with COVID-19 have low levels of vitamin D in their blood. In another recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, it was shown that 82.2% of patients with COVID-19 were vitamin D deficient and men had lower vitamin D levels compared to women. The study also showed that individuals who were vitamin D deficient had a higher prevalence of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and longer hospital stays for COVID-19. The number 2 reason you need vitamin D is that it can help reduce depression. According to a 2013 study, there is a link between having low vitamin D levels and depression. In the study individuals who suffered from depression also had low vitamin D levels and they suggested that statistically people who have low vitamin D levels have a much higher risk for depression. This is because vitamin D is essential for healthy brain function and having low levels can bring about depression and other kinds of mental illnesses. Some symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are aching bones, weakness and pain of the joints and muscles, fatigue, and drowsiness. Some signs of depression to look out for are lethargy, excessive weight gain or weight loss, losing interest in activities you used to enjoy, overwhelming feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and helplessness, excessive sleep or insomnia, loss of appetite, problems concentrating and forgetfulness, headaches or back aches, anxiety and thoughts of death or suicide. If your depression is related to a vitamin D deficiency, increasing your vitamin D intake can help to relieve your symptoms. Please be sure to speak with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and treatment options and what would work best for you. The third reason you need vitamin D is that it helps to boost weight loss. Studies show that increasing your intake of vitamin D can help you on your weight loss journey and help prevent heart disease. According to one study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, individuals who took a daily calcium and vitamin D supplement were able to lose more weight than their counterparts. The study stated that this is because vitamin D has some effect on appetite suppression.
