Is your Cat Vitamin Deficient?

While vitamin B12 deficiency in cats is most commonly associated with intestinal disease and long-term diarrhea, vitamin B12 is essential for so many processes within a cat’s body. A disruption to normal gut function, resulting especially from long-standing diseases, reduces the absorption of B12 (also known as cobalamin) from the intestines and into the body. As absorption is reduced, body stores become low and a deficiency occurs.

Underlying diseases that most commonly cause B12 vitamin deficiency in cats include:
– IBD (inflammatory bowel disease)
– Intestinal cancer (especially small cell lymphoma)
– Liver disease
– Pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases

these diseases do not always result in diarrhea and in fact, cat B12 deficiency might be more common than we think…
