COVID-19 | Discussion on the safety and effectiveness of masks in curbing the spread of coronavirus

About a month ago the WHO issued new guidance on face masks, advising people wear them in places where social distancing is difficult or if you’re over 60 years old. The World Health Organization said everyone in areas with community transmission should wear a face mask where social distancing isn’t possible to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
All healthcare workers in areas with widespread transmission should also wear medical masks, not just those working with coronavirus patients. WHO also reaffirmed that face masks alone cannot prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Dr. Mary Stephen, Technical Officer at the World Health Organisations’ regional office for Africa joins us now to talk about these guidelines and the efficacy of masks.
