Blood type may play a key role in determining who contracts COVID-19 and how severe the illness becomes, according to a recent report published by a group European scientists in the New English Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Researchers studied 1,610 COVID-19 positive patients who experienced respiratory failure. Factors such as age and underlying health conditions such as diabetes can put you at a higher risk of contracting coronavirus, according to the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). But there might just be another factor that might just be putting individuals at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. Individuals who have blood Type A were associated with a 45% higher risk of contracting COVID-19, compared to people with other blood types. People with blood Type O, the most common blood type, are 65% as likely to get coronavirus as people with other blood types. European scientists performed genetic analysis testing on more than 1,900 severe coronavirus cases in Spain and Italy. These test results then compared to over 2,000 patients who were not infected with COVID-19. This study offers new leads in the race for a coronavirus vaccinee.
