Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, fielded questions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic on Friday.

Dr. Fauci said Friday that the U.S. is in an “obviously difficult situation” right now with the recent surge in cases that has left the country with over 3.5 million confirmed cases and nearly 140,000 deaths. Fauci said that in his opinion, the U.S. needs to suppress the resurgence that has occurred in states such as California and Florida.

When asked about a second wave possibly hitting in the fall, Dr. Fauci said the virus is too unpredictable and that they U.S. is essentially in still in the first wave with the resurgence of the virus.

Dr. Fauci also addressed mandating mask wearing in all public venues saying he would urge all public leaders to be “as forceful as possible” to get people to wear masks in all indoor spaces.
