Coronavirus: Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic "go far beyond health," WHO argues | FULL

World Health Organization director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus argued Friday that the impacts of the novel coronavirus “go far beyond health,” urging world leaders to address the humanitarian impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on underdeveloped countries.

“If we fail to address the wider impacts of the pandemic, we risk an even greater crisis than the one brought about by the virus itself,” he said.

Mark Lowcock, United Nations under-secretary-general for the humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, added that the cost of protecting the poorest 10 per cent of the population from the worst effects of COVID-19 would be $90 billion, which he said Is less than about 1 per cent of the stimulus packages put in place by wealthy countries.

Lowcock said that inaction on the humanitarian crises brought on by the pandemic would “leave the virus free to circle the globe” and “wreak havoc” on low-income countries.
