Inside a coronavirus vaccine trial at Imperial College | Covid-19 vaccine update | LBC

Justine is one of the hundreds of volunteers who have put themselves forward for Imperial’s COVID-19 vaccine trial at their West London study facility.

The multi-billion pound study first tested 15 participants, with no concerns, and is now widening to 320 participants in sites around the country.

The participants now won’t know the strength of the dose they are getting.

Dr Katrina Pollock, a Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Vaccinology, said what makes the vaccine unique is the fact that it’s been synthetically created.

It works by getting your own body to produce the virus’s distinctive ‘spike’ proteins, allowing the immune system to recognise the virus’s distinctive surface.

The team say one litre of the Imperial COVID-19 vaccine could be used to vaccinate two million people.
