WATCH: Can herd immunity work?

As many grow anxious about long-term closures due to the pandemic, some are pushing the idea of developing “herd immunity” in order to make most people resistant to the disease by spreading it. Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, said this “is a terrible strategy” and that millions would likely die if we adopted it. Jha spoke with PBS NewsHour’s William Brangham on July 9 to answer viewer questions about the latest information related to the coronavirus, especially as many states start reopening, despite rising case counts.
