Secondary bacterial infections are frequently observed complications in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, associated with an adverse outcome of the disease. Therefore, an early detection of bacterial coinfection is essential to prevent progression to a more severe disease state like sepsis or septic shock.

Monitoring of Procalcitonin (PCT) has been identified as useful additional tool for risk assessment and detection of secondary infections in the current COVID-19 pandemic.
