Explained: Can Herd Immunity Help Us Against COVID-19?

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, most countries have resorted to putting restrictions on the free movement and assembly of people.

Those who were late to do that, like Italy, had to pay a much higher price, and those who were diligent, like Singapore and Taiwan, have better controlled the spread.

India is also under a 21-day lockdown to try and curb the spread. However, there are costs involved in this method too.

This has meant that we have had to think about alternatives to social distancing.

One way out is, of course, a vaccine. And work is underway on that front. However, we might still be months away from a commercially viable, widely accessible vaccine.

A third, and potentially effective option, is to go about the business as usual and let herd immunity against the virus kick in.

What is herd immunity, and can it really help stave off the spread of the virus?

We explain that in the video.
