Optimize Your Immunity: Integrative Medicine and COVID-19

University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins and Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, discuss ways we can all help strengthen our immune systems amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Often referred to as ‘the father of integrative medicine,’ Dr. Weil suggests there are a number of healthy lifestyle practices that we can start today to optimize resistance to infection. These include getting good rest and sleep, engaging in light to moderate physical activity, getting proper nutrition and even laughing. Sharing funny stories, jokes or videos with each other during this time can actually help our immune systems.
When it comes to natural remedies that can augment the health practices shared by our public health officials, we don’t have to go too far. Vitamin D is said to help boost immunity, as do herbs like astragalus, turmeric and garlic. And don’t forget the beneficial properties of green tea.
This isn’t the last, or worst pandemic we will see in our lifetimes, unfortunately. But eating more plant-based foods and herbs, and getting enough sleep and exercise to keep our bodies functioning optimally will help prevent us contracting infections or reducing the severity of an illness if we are infected.

About the University of Arizona:
Universities are defined by their people, and you could say the people here were born to challenge “business as usual.” The University of Arizona existed before Arizona was a state. Our first graduating class in 1895 consisted of two women and one male.
Since then, we’ve learned that we’re better together. We do more when we work across backgrounds, skills and perspectives. That’s how we’ve become long-time partners with NASA, leaders in both the arts and sciences, and able to prepare students to succeed in a world where most of the jobs today’s kindergartners will have don’t even exist yet. We know how to converge.
