Ashley Hinson ducks out during Iowa House COVID-19 immunity debate

On June 5, 2020, State Representative Ashley Hinson (the GOP nominee for Congress in Iowa’s first district) left the Iowa House chamber after voting on an uncontroversial amendment to a bill granting near-total immunity to employers and nursing home owners for lawsuits related to COVID-19. The House was set to debate more controversial amendments next. Leaving the floor meant that Democratic colleagues could not ask Hinson questions about the bill.

Hinson would return briefly as needed to vote on various amendments or motions, after which she immediately left the chamber again.
