Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin through a process called photolysis and is called the ‘sunshine’ vitamin. The lower the actual sun exposure, the more nutrition becomes important, especially the consumption of fatty fish, vitamin D-fortified foods, and vitamin D supplements.

It is estimated that approximately 80% of the population are deficient in Vitamin D. Vitamin D can be assessed by a simple blood test, so ask your doctor and whilst there ask for a magnesium level as well. The body requires magnesium to covert Vit D from the skin.
Normal rates are estimated on the population’s Vitamin D level. According to the Institute of Medicine, vitamin D deficiency occurs when the serum 25(OH)D concentration is below 30 nmol/L. Opinions differ on optimal serum levels however, for bone mineral density, bone turnover, muscle strength, and nonclassical effects levels should be 50 nmol/L, 75 nmol/L, or higher.

A low Vitamin D3 status has been reported to cause insulin resistance and diabetes development, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, infectious diseases, chronic pain, and psychological disorders such as depression. In addition, observational studies have suggested that women with a low Vitamin D status are predisposed to polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, infertility, and breast and ovarian cancer.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in certain risk groups, such as children with low birth weight (premature and small for gestational age), pregnant women, older people, and non-Western immigrants. Pregnant women, especially non-Western pregnant women and their children, are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency. The dermal synthesis of vitamin D decreases with age, and the elderly are high risk.

A study recommended there should be further research into vitamin D supplements to help prevent, reduce or improve the clinical course of Acute Respitratory Infection . The suggested dosages were 2000 i.u for those at risk, the elderly, people with asthma and a lower adjusted dose for children.
