Our adaptive immune system has evolved over hundreds of millions of years to protect humans from disease, including pandemics like the one we are living through today. When different immune cells, called T cells, recognize “foreign” substances or antigens, such as those that are a part of pathogenic virus or bacteria, they activate a set of defenses to try to keep us healthy.
