COVID-19: Is ‘Herd Immunity’ Worth a Try in Pakistan?

The entire world is walking a fine line between salvation and destruction, In pursuit of finding ways to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Most noticeably Sweden has taken an interesting approach, by resorting to the ‘Herd Immunity’ Principal. Despite backlash from the adversaries regarding the approach, the Swedish government claims that their strategy is actually working. To be clear, herd immunity is a phenomenon where a large group of the population gets infected and recovers, thus building immunity and breaking the chain of the spread. Most often, this approach works in the presence of a vaccine. And as per the word from the experts, the development of a vaccine could take months.

There have been debates as to whether or not Pakistan should opt for the same strategy. Which seems viable owing to the large population of young adults in the country. However, there is the very real risk of this approach going very wrong, since every person has a unique reaction to the virus and there has not yet been a sample size large enough to confirm the effectiveness of herd immunity. The Government of Pakistan has relaxed lockdowns for the marginalized segments to carry on earning their daily livelihoods. However, with the lockdowns having been relaxed the number of patients has started rising drastically. Which begs the question “Is herd immunity worth a try in Pakistan?”
The answer to which we must find out together.
