vitamin A as a regulator of immune function goes back to the early 1900s. Recently, several lines of evidence have converged to show that retinoic acid (RA), a major oxidative metabolite of vitamin A, plays a key role in the differentiation of T cell subsets, the migration of T cells into tissues, and the proper development of T cell-dependent antibody responses. This review discusses evidence from experimental studies that RA promotes the differentiation of regulatory T cells, which help to suppress inflammatory reactions, and plays a significant role in normal mucosal immunity by modulating T cell activation and regulating cell trafficking.

Vitamin D and the immune system.
As the vitamin D receptor is expressed on immune cells (B cells, T cells, and antigen-presenting cells), and these immunologic cells are all capable of synthesizing the active vitamin D metabolite, vitamin D has the capability of acting in an autocrine manner in a local immunologic milieu. Vitamin D can modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses. Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity and an increased susceptibility to infection.
Suara, R. O., & Crowe, J. E., Jr (2004). Effect of zinc salts on respiratory syncytial virus replication. Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, 48(3), 783–790.
The results of this study suggest that zinc mediates antiviral activity on RSV by altering the ability of the cell to support RSV replication. Zinc supplementation in children in developing countries was demonstrated to cause a significant reduction in the prevalence of pneumonia. Zinc has been shown to mediate antiviral effects against certain viruses. Clinical studies showed that zinc significantly shortens the duration of symptoms during rhinovirus infection. Topical application of zinc sulfate also was found in one study to be effective in the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. The specific mechanism by which zinc mediated these clinical effects is unknown in most cases. Zinc also enhances the host response to many infections and plays an important role in the homeostasis of the immune system . Zinc deficiency, often seen in the context of malnutrition, is associated with an impaired cellular immune response.
