The immune system protects our body from various diseases and infections and being deficient even in one vitamin can affect the immune system adversely. In this video, our Nutrition Coach Pallavi Kabra talks about certain vitamins that boost the immune system.
Vitamin C – The C vitamin plays a primary role in boosting the immune system. It boosts the cytokine production by the white blood cells that help fight infections and pathogens. Vitamin C also has antioxidant properties. Fruits like oranges, lemon, guava, amla and vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, capsicum, bell peppers are rich sources of Vitamin C.
Vitamin A and D – Vitamin A has anti-inflammatory properties and it plays a vital role in boosting the immune system. Bright coloured vegetables like pumpkin and carrots are a great source of Vitamin A. Similarly, there are several studies which prove that Vitamin D has immunologic effects resulting to promote protective immunity. Vitamin D is produced by our body in response to sunlight.
Vitamin B6 – Vitamin B6 helps in the production of T cells which are a part of our WBC that help regulate the immune function. Whole grain cereals such as oatmeal, brown rice, soybean, peanuts and some breakfast cereals fortified with Vitamin B6 are some great sources of this Vitamin.
Vitamin E – Vitamin E is also an important nutrient in boosting the immune system especially in elderly people. Vitamin E is most commonly found in nuts like almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and vegetable oils.
