How Healthy Are Almonds?

Almonds are a popular tree nut and remain one of the more popular nuts in the world. However, some individuals are reluctant to add almonds to their diet due to their reputation of being high in fat content and also high in calories. As we will discuss, almonds make an excellent choice for practically any diet and contain healthy fats that not only support health and wellness, but can also support many important bodily functions. It is important to note that almond should be consumed in moderation, with one quarter to one half cup often recommended depending on your caloric needs. Now, lets discuss just how healthy almonds are.

1. First, although some individuals are concerned about the fat content in almonds, almost all of the fat comes from healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, with trace amounts of saturated fat and zero trans fats. Almonds also contain good amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fat sources are great for our overall health, and even make almonds a good choice for maintaining a heathy weight.

2. Almonds are also incredibly nutrient dense, which mean you due not need to eat them in large amounts and can stick to consuming them in moderation. They are an excellent source of multiple vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, such as vitamin E, manganese, riboflavin, magnesium, copper and phosphorus to name a few. They are also packed with antioxidants, are an amazing source of fibre and high in healthy fats as mentioned above.

3. Regular consumption of almonds are also one of the best food choices for heart health and can help to reduce heart disease many different ways. Almonds have been shown in studies to help lower cholesterol levels, a major risk factor for heart disease. They can help to significantly lower “bad” LDL cholesterol while also maintaining or increasing “good” HDL cholesterol. Almonds can also help to regulate and lower blood pressure levels as research indicated while also preventing LDL cholesterol oxidation.

4. Almonds can also help to control blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for those individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the disease. This is in large part due to the healthy fats found in almonds, as well as high levels of fibre, protein and other nutrition. Importantly, almonds are also an amazing source of magnesium, which studies have shown is very helpful in controlling blood sugar levels. They can also help to improve insulin function, reduce insulin resistance and significantly lower blood sugar levels.

5. Lastly, not only are almonds and amazing source of nutrition, but they are also a great source of antioxidants, which can offer many health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, improving the look and health of the skin and reducing the risk of illness and chronic disease. Many of these antioxidants are found in the brown skin of the almonds, so be sure to consume almonds without the skin removed. Almonds can also help to reduce damaging free radicals and oxidative stress.
