Vitamins & Medicine – Fiqh Moment for the 6th Night of the Month of Ramadan, 1441 A.H.

Q: If a person thinks they are getting sick with a bad cold and need to stay hydrated and take lots of vitamins throughout the day to prevent the impending sickness, should they break their fast [and take the vitamins] or fast knowing there is a chance they will get sick?

A: If the person is ill [currently] and unable to fast because they need to take medicine during the day, they can break their fast and make it up after the month of Ramadan. However, anticipating or assuming that they might get sick later because of fasting [and not drinking liquids or taking vitamins] is not a valid reason not to fast if they are able to do so at that moment.
