We all know how important it is to get essential vitamins and minerals in our diets every day. However, with the busy lives we lead and the rise of dieting trends, it can be difficult to maintain an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. Whole foods are a great source of these essential nutrients, yet when dieting eating maybe limited due to the calorie restrictive diet. To help fill the gap when we aren’t able to eat so much, multivitamins supplement to provide what we need to help maintain our health needs. Before deciding to consume supplements do consider that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate the safety and sale of nutritional supplements, because they are classified as food products rather than medicines. Yet, it is suggested by nutritional experts that a “basic” multivitamin should include these “standard” vitamins and minerals: Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folate Acid, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, and Zinc. The multivitamins should always have the nutritional labels the daily value (DV) or the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) listed to inform and help guide consumers about general dosing instructions. It is also suggested by scientist that since supplement are not regulated, that consumers choose vitamins that are “verified” through 3rd party testing labs for “potency and purity” of the product. It is important not to exceed the recommended amounts of vitamins, more does not necessarily mean better performance with regards to all vitamins. Excess water-soluble vitamins pass through the body with greater ease by drinking more water. Whereas, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals may accumulate within the body which in excess may be harmful to the body. As always consult with your medical doctor to determine and monitor your current state of individual health.
