Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem, especially among people who live in northern latitudes or who spend little time outdoors. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), about 40% of Americans have a vitamin D deficiency.

Deficiency Symptoms:
Vitamin D deficiency can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, bone pain, muscle aches, and increased risk of falls and fractures. Severe vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, both of which cause softening and weakening of the bones.

Best Foods:
Some of the best food sources of vitamin D include fatty fish (such as salmon and tuna), egg yolks, mushrooms, and fortified foods such as milk, orange juice, and cereals. However, it can be difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone, and most people need to get some vitamin D from sunlight exposure or supplements.

Low Vitamin D:
Low vitamin D levels can be caused by a variety of factors, including insufficient sunlight exposure, a diet low in vitamin D, malabsorption disorders, and certain medications. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with a higher risk of several health problems, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer.
