Doctor: What Vitamin D and Covid-19 have to do with joint pain and arthritis | Feb 8,2022

A new study out of Israel shows that normal vitamin D levels are strongly protective against the need for hospitalization in people infected with COVID-19. The PLOS journal in which the study came out seems credible. We know that Vitamin D deficiency has a lot to do with bone and joint health. There is a very interesting relationship between vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone that has a strong effect on gene expression. Many of the genes affected by vitamin D are involved in inflammation. That is the connection between bone and joint pain and COVID19.

Studies have shown mixed results comparing vitamin D as medicine for knee and back pain.

Long story short, there is not enough evidence to recommend vitamin D as a medicine. However, it is definitely not something you want to be below normal. So, have your level measured. Eat foods rich in vitamin D. And take a supplement if needed to keep your blood level in the normal range.
