COVID-19 mutations make achieving herd immunity difficult: KDCA

전국민 95% 항체 있어도…방역당국 “변이 나와 집단면역은 안돼”

The chances of achieving herd immunity to COVID-19 are reportedly slim for South Korea.
According to the KDCA, constantly mutating viruses like COVID-19 make it hard to prevent the spread of different strains, and reinfections would occur as antibodies decrease over time.
The agency said nearly 95 percent of the population has antibodies against the coronavirus based on a study of more than 16-hundred people from January to April, which raised the question of whether this qualifies as herd immunity.
The WHO has yet to define a percentage of antibody positivity that would constitute herd immunity.
