Vitamin C and the Immune System | Roles of Vitamin C in Respiratory Infections

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is an essential, water-soluble vitamin that is required in the human diet as it is necessary for a variety of bodily systems, including the immune system. Vitamin C has roles in the innate immune system as it is important for the maintenance and health of the epithelial barrier (skin), and it is also important for immune cell functioning. In this lesson, we discuss the roles of vitamin C in the innate and adaptive immune systems, and how supplementation is important in treatment of respiratory infections, among others.
