Vitamin B3 Niacin Deficiency (Pellagra) | Sources, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
**PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING ERRORS:**
1) When I said, “niacin is also known as nicotinic acid or nicotinamide”, this is incorrect – niacin IS also known as nicotinic acid, but nicotinamide is another form of vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 comes in THREE forms: Niacin (also known as nicotinic acid), nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide), and nicotinamide riboside.
2) When I said NADP is generated in the pentose phosphate pathway, I meant to say “NADPH” is generated in the pentose phosphate pathway.
3) Pellagra is a condition CAUSED BY NIACIN DEFICIENCY, not necessarily another term for Niacin deficiency
***Sorry for the confusion***
Welcome to another lesson in the Vitamin B series!
Vitamin B3 (Niacin) is a water soluble vitamin required for nutrient metabolism and synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. Niacin is acquired from dietary sources and via endogenous synthesis in the liver. In this lesson, we discuss the dietary sources of niacin, recommended daily intake, absorption/excretion, causes, signs and symptoms of Pellagra (condition caused by deficiency of niacin), diagnosis and treatment.
