Aiming to reach herd immunity, China is encouraging all eligible residents to get Covid-19 vaccines. Unlike other countries that prioritise the elderly, only people aged 18-59 are currently eligible for jabs in China. Health officials said the senior group will be covered once enough clinical data is collected. The country’s mass inoculation programme has administered 74.96 million doses as of March 20, 2021. All doses so far were produced domestically, with four vaccines having been approved and one more authorised for emergency use. Though China has largely brought the pandemic under control within its borders, health officials worry about an increase in infections as the world gradually eases travel restrictions.
