GIZ: Nutrient Dense Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes. Vitamin A source in Northern Ethiopia. 2019

The Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) has great nutritional benefits. It is an excellent source of fiber, minerals and Provitamin A (β-carotene). Provitamin A is essential for normal immune system function and healthy vision. A Provitamin A deficiency is linked with serious health issues and decreased immune system function. The Vitamin deficiency is mainly caused by an inadequate intake of β-carotene rich food. The Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Project (NSAP) is contributing to improve dietary diversity and the nutrition of women and children by introducing OFSP to farmers in rural areas. The priest Majur Gebremedhin who has been cultivating and consuming OFSP the last three years, gives an insight on how his family’s diet has changed since he started cultivating OFSP. Besides cultivating for self-consumption, priest Gebremedhin managed to harvest OFSP which he sells in the local market.
