South African variant: Boris Johnson 'confident' all vaccines provide immunity against all variants

Boris Johnson has said he said he was “confident that all the vaccines we’re using provide a high degree of immunity and protection against all variants”

He added: “We are going to be living with Covid for a while to come. I don’t think it will be as bad as the last 12 months, but it is very important that out vaccines continue to develop and adapt – and they will.”

It comes after news that door-to-door testing for the South African mutation of the coronavirus is to start in England after two cases were reported in Surrey.

Previous cases involving the variant have been traced back to South Africa, but these new cases are understood to have been transmitted locally.
