Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on the planet. The year of the virus has brought chaos to the world at large. There are millions of varieties of virus, but we have only defined a few thousand. They exist everywhere, in our surrounding, the oceans, the soil and in every living being. One teaspoon of seawater contains about ten million viruses, and they are essential to the regulation of saltwater and freshwater ecosystems. They infect and destroy harmful bacteria in aquatic microbial communities, and this is the most important mechanism of recycling carbon in the marine environment.
