Elephant Apple is native to the East Indies – from India, Sri Lanka east to southwestern China (Yunnan) and Vietnam and south through Thailand to Malaysia and Indonesia. Fruit pulp is bitter-sour and are used in Indian cuisine for making curries, jam and jellies. It is habitually mixed with coconut and spices to make chutneys. It is far used in Dal and in fish preparations in Assam.
