Health Hack #1 – How Much Oil and Fats Should You Use While Cooking?

You should ideally use vegetable oils – the ones that are not refined and not processed.
Most of the cooking oils today are heavily processed and hydrogenated irrespective of what the label on their packets say.

For healthy eating, you may use any of the following:
1. Ghee (I personally use this)
2. Unprocessed Coconut Oil (I personally use this)
3. Unprocessed Mustard Oil
4. Butter

The basic principle is to use oils that have healthy fats or good fats in them.

While cooking, it is very important that your oil does not reach the smoking point.
The reason for this is that when you heat oils past its smoking point, the structure of the fats within starts breaking down. This leads to the formation of harmful free radicals which leads to the oil losing its nutritional benefits. so fats are not bad in themselves, but even “good” fats and oils used can turn “bad” if heated up to smooking point.

Qty of Oil – 1 Teaspoon
When to put Oil – Not immediately, only when the pan has become hot but for this right cookware is needed preferably ceramic or a quality stainless steel cookware. its more expensive but lasts much longer.

Health Hack #2 – Be Mindful of the Colours On Your Plate

Different colours in different vegetables have different phytonutrients.
This means when you eat vegetables of the same colour, you end up getting the same group of nutrients. This is not desirable as we need all variety of nutrients for healthy eating and healthy living.

Health Hack #3 – Use little Water and Low Flame for Cooking

Why should you use less water while cooking?

Water-soluble Vitamins like Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and folates leach out of the vegetable when you use too much water. Thereby decreasing the health benefits of the vegetables that you are eating.

Health Hack #4 – Use the Right Cookware

Aluminum and non-stick cookware are not good for your health. Regardless, 80 to 90% of the households in India still use Aluminium and non-stick cookware.

You should instead use Quality Stainless Steel instead (I personally use it).

Benefits of Stainless Steel over Aluminium and non-stick cookware:
1. It is economical as it works for years without any problems. though the initial cost is much higher
2. Provides health benefits – you can use less water and less oil at low flame when compared to aluminum and non-stick cookware.
