The plantain tree is a member of the banana family. Its origin is Southeast Asia, but it grows in many other regions. Plantains are the fruits of the tree. They are bigger and starchier than bananas and harvested when green. They can be had ripe or unripe. When ripe the colour changes to yellow. Plantains that are yellow with brown or black spots are usually softer and sweeter. They are generally eaten when cooked. Jamaicans tend to eat it fried, boiled, grilled, roasted or seamed. In Jamaica, it can be used to make porridge, pastry or chips. Plantains contain vitamin A & C, B6, iron, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber.

1. They are good for digestive health.
This is because they are prebiotics & so, they help to promote the growth of good bacteria in the colon. In addition, they are high in fiber & this helps to bulk up your stool, which will regularize bowel movements & help with constipation.
2. It can help with weight management.
A lot of people believe that carbs will cause you to gain weight. This is not the case with complex carbs and plantains are complex carbs. Complex carbs will cause you stay fuller for longer periods of time, which will help to curb hunger pangs & so, you will be less likely to snack on unhealthy meals.
3. It is very high in antioxidants
Plantains are a good source of vitamin C and this acts as an antioxidant, that helps to boost your immunity & protect against free radical damage. Free radicals are linked to diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

This is because the potassium content is very high and potassium helps to maintain cell and body fluids that control heart rate and blood pressure. The fiber content of plantains will also help to lower cholesterol, which are all good for heart health.
