The interim Phase 1/2a data was published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. A preview of part of these interim data was posted on medRxiv in September 2020.

As per the data, the single-dose investigational COVID-19 vaccine candidate provided an immune response that lasted for at least 71 days. This is the duration of time measured in this study in participants aged 18-55 years.

The most common side effects were fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches and pain at the injection site, according to the trial data. Side effects were less common in the older age group, who received only one dose of the vaccine, as well as those who received a lower dose of the vaccine, according to the data.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has defended the purchase of the COVID-19 vaccines developed by the Chinese makers, saying the Chinese vaccines are “safe, sure, and secure.”

In a taped public address aired late Wednesday night, Duterte said the vaccines produced by China are as good as those made by U.S. and European pharmaceutical firms.

“The Chinese did not fall short in producing the vaccine. They are not stupid. The Chinese are bright, and they would not venture into vaccine production if they know those will not be safe, sure and secure,” Duterte said.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque echoed Duterte’s statement, saying that he also prefers the Chinese companies Sinovac and Sinopharm inactivated vaccines.

Inactivated is safe because the inactivated technology has been in use for hundreds of years. “So, if I could, I will choose the two Chinese brands because they are inactivated vaccines,” he told an online briefing on Thursday.

COVID-19 is potentially dangerous to all people, but studies show that pregnant women who develop symptomatic COVID-19 are at increased risk for getting very sick.

The CDC says pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized, admitted to the ICU and more likely to be put on a ventilator than women who are not pregnant. Pregnant women have increased risk of complications due to changes in their respiratory and immune systems during pregnancy.

With all of these increased risks, many pregnant women are wondering if they should get the COVID-19 vaccine when it’s available to them. Ob/gyn Oluwatosin Goje, MD, discusses what pregnant and breastfeeding women need to know about coronavirus vaccination.

Although pregnant and breastfeeding women were not included in the initial COVID-19 vaccine trials, existing safety data provide reassurance regarding their safety. Because the COVID-19 vaccines do not contain the live virus (instead it’s an mRNA vaccine), they are not thought to cause increased risk of infertility, first or second trimester loss, still birth or congenital anomalies. Additionally, there is no evidence to suggest that the vaccine is a risk to a breastfeeding baby. The vaccines do not enter our DNA or change the genetic make up.
