COVID-19

MMR and Vitamin D verses COVID 19

High mumps titer was common in subjects with asymptomatic and functionally immune COVID-19 cases. On the other hand, people with low mumps titer values (below 75 AU/ml) were known to have moderate to severe symptoms related to COVID-19.
Additionally, it appears that Vitamin D deficiency markedly increases the chance of having severe COVID 19 disease after infection with SARS Cov-2. Diminished Vitamin D levels is associated with increase morbidity and mortality in patients who are deficient in vitamin D.
It is important to know that MMR vaccine has been the mainstay in our vaccination program and is considered safe with very few side effects. Theoretically this means as long as you have high concentrations of mumps antibody and high Vitamin D in the bloodstream your risk for severe COVID 19 infection is likely low.
It makes sense that until we are all able to receive the vaccine it may be prudent to maximize the benefit of being subjected to severe infection from COVID-19, especially in high risk population.
