The new COVID-19 Variant, also referred to as the UK Variant or B.1.1.7, has now been identified in 32 countries. How transmissible is it? Does it cause more severe disease? Where has it been found so far? What other variants are out there? Can it be detected on tests? Is it resistant to vaccines? We will dive into all of these questions and work to answer them. We will also discuss in general how SARS-CoV-2 virus mutates, how often, and why.

B.1.1.7 was first identified in the United Kingdom a number of months ago garnering attention in December when its prevalence exponentially increased raising concerns about increased transmissibility. Since this time, it has spread to 32 different countries and really become global. Early studies suggest a 56% increase in transmissibility. Early studies raise concern about increased transmissibility related to spike protein mutations. Relatedly, people have raised concerns about the PCR tests not being able to detect this variant given it’s mutations, as well as possible resistance to vaccinations given these vaccines target the spike protein. We will dive into all of these things and more!
