Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Welcome to this week’s Family Health Minute.

This week’s minute looks at a very important vitamin, Vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 deficiency in North America is experienced by 6% of people under 60 years of age and 20% over 60.

Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency include:
Forgetfulness or decline in mental ability
Daytime sleepiness or chronic fatigue
Irritability, depression, or anxiety
Headaches
Dizziness
Numbness or tingling

Vitamin B12 is found in meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, and eggs.

Although plants do not contain vitamin B12, some breakfast cereals and other foods made from plants are fortified with vitamin B12.

Some causes of vitamin B12 deficiency include:
Aging, a vegetarian diet, some medications, intestinal disease (celiac disease, Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis), and pregnancy.

Lack of vitamin B12 is serious since it can cause permanent nerve damage.

Many people with B12 deficiency can be treated by eating more animal products, and most can be treated by taking B12 supplements or B12 injections.

Improve your overall health with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, a positive attitude, and regular chiropractic care.

Make chiropractic a regular health habit for the whole family to ensure your spines and nervous systems are working the best they can.

And that is this week’s Family Health Minute.
