Vitamin C is known to affect skeletal muscle mass but very little research has been carried out in this area. A research team from University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Norwich Medical School has studied whether increased consumption of Vitamin C leads to increased skeletal mass.
The research group observed that individuals with the highest concentrations of vitamin C in their diet or blood had the greatest estimated skeletal muscle mass, compared to those with the lowest concentrations.
The findings indicate that higher consumption of vitamin C has the potential to protect and prevent age related loss in skeletal muscle mass. Dietary vitamin C is important for maintaining muscle health in older age. The researchers suggest that a diet rich in citrus fruits and vegetables would provide sufficient dietary vitamin C which may reduce loss of skeletal muscle mass with age.
