Bag of Frozen Gooseberry was sitting in my Freezer for weeks. There was a day during Corona virus lockdown we were left with very few items in our Fridge and a bag of Frozen gooseberries . I was thinking about what to prepare for lunch and while talking to my Friend about it, she gave me this new recipe. When I heard about it, I was wondering whether it would be good, But it came out very well and now we are making this very often in our home. Amla Rasam or Indian Gooseberry/Nellikai Rasam is a mildly spiced healthy rasam (south Indian soup like broth) made from wholesome gooseberries full of nutrients and vitamins. Enjoy this with a bowl of hot steamed rice or as a light and healthy soup any time.

Gooseberry or amla as it is called in north India or Nellikai in south India is a powerful super food and a powerhouse of nutrients. It is rich in Vitamin C, iron, calcium and can be consumed raw, juiced or in pickles, jams, rasam, soups etc. Although it is indigenous to India, you can find this at any Indian grocery store all over the world.

Ingredients:

Indian Gooseberries – 2 sliced
Green Chilli – 2
Garlic – 2 cloves
Ginger – Small Piece
Cumin Seeds – 1 Teaspoon
Pepper – 1 Teaspoon
Water – 2 cups
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 Teaspoon
Oil – 2 Teaspoon
Mustard – 1 Teaspoon
Red Chilli – 1
Curry leaves – As required
Asafoetida – 1/4 Teaspoon
Coriander leaves – To taste
