It normally takes months to record a certain number of cases and determine the final efficacy of a vaccine. But the infection rates in the US have been skyrocketing, speeding up the time schedule required for the analysis of the final results from Phase III trial. The vaccine uses mRNA to provide the instructions for human cells to make the coronavirus’ spike protein. With these instructions, the human cells now can produce the viral protein. So later on, when the human body encounters the coronavirus, its immune system knows how to fight off the virus. The efficacy of Pfizer’s vaccine is now equivalent with the preliminary results from Moderna’s vaccine trial. The vaccine was found to be more than 94% effective for older people among 65 and older. The vaccine with two shots spaced a month apart could also reduce the severity of the disease. Pfizer and BioNTech are planning to apply to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an emergency use authorization within days. Hopefully, their vaccines will be available by the end of the year.
