Rates of suicide and depression naturally increase during the holiday seasons, and this year we are also faced with lock downs and a pandemic. The global events that are out of our control can lead to higher rates of anxiety and depression this season which are particularly prevalent in the elder generations (as they are disconnected from social media).

Here are some realistic mental health practices that you can implement to prevent or conquer the covid-christmas blues, and keep a good morale this holiday season;

1. Supplementation:
Omega 1200
– Healthy fat that builds up the myelin sheath in the brain
– anti-inflammatory in the nervous system
– helps to produce happy hormones (Dopamine and serotonin)

Dose: 2 soft gels
*With dinner

Vitamin D
– Lack of sunlight in the winter seasons leads to higher rates of depression
– Sunshine vitamin
– Important for mood balancing

Dose: 1-2 Caps
*With dinner

Magnesium
– Combats stress
– Relieves anxiety
– Nervous system relaxant
– Whole body relaxant
– Required to produce hormones
– Balances Mood

Dose: 1 Capsule 2x per day
*In AM and before bed

2. Essential oils
– The sense of smell is extremely underrated for mental health. Smelling activated the olfactory system in the brain and bypasses the thalamus and goes directly to the nervous system
– You can diffuse the oils or rub them on your temples.
Some uplifting and calming essential oils include: Orange, Grapefruit, chamomile, neroli, jasmine, sandalwood, lavender.

3. GO OUTSIDE
– at least 10 minutes per day you need to go outside to regulate the circadian rhythm that governs our hormones.

TURN OFF THE NEWS!
The theory of mass media states that what you hear around you, you begin to internalize, and it affects how you think, which affects how you feel and ultimately behave. Surround yourself with more positive information and you will reduce the amount of stressful thoughts that take place in your subconscious.
