Tomatoes – 14 Benefits of Eating Tomato on Empty Stomach

Tomato is one fruit that has an interesting history. It was once thought to be poisonous, and as a result, caused fear among the Europeans in the 18th century. That was largely a misunderstanding, as they ingested lead from the plates they used. Tomatoes are mostly mistaken for a vegetable. They are native to South America and belong to the Nightshade family.

Tomatoes are as rich and delicious as they look. They are made up of 95% water and 5% fiber and carbohydrates. They are full of plenty of nutrients, compounds, and health benefits. Tomatoes are a main dietary source of lycopene, which is an antioxidant that halts oxidation and free radical damage.

Lycopene gives the tomato its reddish color and has been linked to many health benefits such as reducing the risk of cancer and heart diseases. Tomatoes also contain many other antioxidants like naringenin, chlorogenic acid, and beta-carotene. Antioxidants decrease cholesterol levels, protect the blood vessels from hardening, strengthen the immune system, and generally improve health.

Tomatoes also contain many vitamins A, B1, B3, B5, B6, B7, E, K, and most vitamin C. They also contain iron, potassium, chromium, choline, folate, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorus. All these nutrients and compounds serve many functions and support the body.

Tomatoes are mostly eaten as vegetables. They form the main part of many cuisines. They are found in burgers, pizza, sandwiches, salads, beverages, ketchup, pasta, and so much more. Tomatoes can be prepared or used in diverse forms such as puree, tomato juices, raw tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, soups, and stewed tomatoes. To get more lycopene, you should use canned tomatoes because of the high absorption rate by the body.

There are many varieties of tomatoes. Tomatoes and their subspecies may come in different shapes, colors, and flavors. Tomatoes come in a variety of colors, which include green, orange, yellow, purple, and mostly red when matured.
