The 411 on Thiamin (Vitamin B6)

As part of our ongoing series looking at the different vitamins and minerals, our nutritionist Kendra Whitmire discusses vitamin B1 or thiamin. It plays an important role in energy production and the nervous system. Severe thiamin deficiency is known as beriberi, but milder deficiency may present as:

• Mental confusion
• Fatigue
• Anorexia or loss of appetite
• Muscle weakness
• Calf muscle tenderness
• Indigestion
• Palpitations
• Heart problems
• Irritability
• Apathy
• Reduced reflexes
• Pins and needles in your arms and legs
• Blurry vision
• Nausea, vomiting, and other GI distress
• Delirium
