Best Sources for Vitamin D – as part of the nutrition series by GeoBeats.

In the wintertime we get much less exposure to sunlight, so we are making less vitamin D on our skin. So it is important to make sure in your diet you get foods that are high in vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for your bone health. It is going to help calcium keep your bones strong, and it also is good for our heart and our immunity. So, sources of vitamin D. First of all, vitamin D fortified dairy products are probably the predominant source in the American diet. Most milk is fortified with vitamin D, so you want to choose a low-fat milk, nonfat or 1% preferably. Yogurt is fortified with vitamin D as well. You can now get some vitamin D fortified juices like orange juice to help with your vitamin D in your diet.

Some other natural sources are canned salmon and canned tuna. If you eat canned salmon or tuna a couple times a week, that would be a nice source of vitamin D. The other thing is fortified cereals. There is many cereals that are now fortified with vitamin D as well as other nutrients, like a Total type cereal or a raisin bran. So, make sure on a daily basis you do try to get some vitamin D, either from a supplement or from those foods that I mentioned that are sources, the dairy products that are fortified or the natural sources of vitamin D that are in fish.
