Hi, I’m Doctor Heather Stamm from Stamm Dental Wellness and I’m here to do a video on diabetes and not sure if you realize how much of diabetes is a problem in this country. The CDC estimates over thirty four million adults – American adults have diabetes. Another estimated seven million or more of adults have diabetes and don’t even realize it and then 88 million adults have pre-diabetes and that’s one in three adults in America. So this is a problem here and you know diabetes can wreak havoc on your entire body and take a toll on your entire body. I mean as a dentist, of course, at Stamm Dental Wellness I look at you as a whole individual not just your mouth, but we see diabetic when you have diabetes. We see things in your mouth as well that can cause problems. One thing we know is you diabetes patients suffer from dry mouth and saliva is needed to protect your teeth and your gums from infection from getting cavities and we know that you have delayed wound healing which can have problems in your mouth as well.

There is issues with bleeding gums, which is gingivitis and that can cause problems with your entire immunity. 22 percent of people with diabetes, at least 22 percent, have bone loss, periodontitis, you know gum disease, and this is a big problem. Most people don’t even realize they have gum disease. It’s kind of like hypertension. It’s a silent issue a silent disease. And so a lot of people walk around and don’t even realize they have an open infection in their mouth which can wreak havoc caused problems in general in your entire body. So, you know, what can we do about it? What can you do about it? I have a dental action plan. I mean first things first, you know, see your physician, get your your glucose checked regularly. If you have been prescribed any medications take them make sure you’re stable because that is a big difference if you’re able to control your blood sugar in a stable way, and then of course brush, floss or use a water tip pick to clean between your teeth, and see your dentist at least two times a year. A lot of times because people with diabetes are more likely to have active gum infection, you actually need to go to the dentist more than two times a year.

So, another thing is if you’re suffering from dry mouth, you know, make sure you’re having lots of water during the day at least eight glasses a day and beware of bottled water. A lot of bottled water is acidic which can cause more problems and make your teeth actually softer. So just make sure you’re not drinking acidic water. And you know, make sure you’re eating a healthy diet, watch that that sugar levels. I have a video on sugar if you want to check that out as well. But a healthy fats healthy protein is super important for your blood sugar. And of course exercise. It’s shown that that really helps control your blood sugar as well. – They’re recommending, you know 30 minutes a day. Even better go outside get some vitamin D as well, which helps your body with inflammation and it helps your immune system stay strong. And then also make sure you’re getting your sleep, and that’s quality sleep. We have all kinds of information on what that means for you and we look at a whole bunch of different things related to sleep.

You know, check out my blog for more information and specific details about this, but this isn’t just going away in our country. We need to stand together and make people aware that might be walking around and not even realize that you know diabetes is taking control in their body. So I’m always here if you need anything, if you need more information, we’re here for you at Stamm Dental Wellness. Take care.
