For those that get over COVID-19, new research shows immunity to the virus can last for a minimum of 5-7 months, and should last for much longer .
Understanding how our system responds to the virus is a crucial step in vaccine development.
Several promising vaccines are in development, but until they’re available we must use tools like physical distancing and mask-wearing to stay transmission down.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been a push to develop a vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
If scientists can do this quickly, and while we slow the spread of the disease, it’s believed that we will limit deaths by achieving herd immunity.
While scientists are working hard on many fronts to know the virus and develop controls for it, there’s still much we don’t realize immunity after recovery from COVID-19, including how long it lasts.
Knowing how long immunity lasts is vital in creating vaccination protocols.
What we currently realize COVID-19 immunity
According to Lauren Rodda, PhD, a senior postdoctoral fellow in immunology at the University of Washington School of drugs , we don’t know surely if people are resistant to reinfection just because not enough studies are done yet.
“This would require tracking the reexposure of a big number of individuals and determining if they get sick,” she said.
However, a study published within the journal Immunity on Tuesday, found that folks who get over even mild cases of COVID-19 produce antibodies that are believed to guard against infection for a minimum of 5 to 7 months, and will last for much longer .
“We conclude that neutralizing antibodies are stably produced for a minimum of 5-7 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the team of researchers, lead by Deepta Bhattacharya, an immunobiologist at the University of Arizona College of drugs , wrote in their report.
The team has tested nearly 30,000 people in Arizona since they began on April 30, shortly after they developed a biopsy for coronavirus.
Though the study’s finding are promising, the researchers haven’t checked to ascertain if any of the people they tested were exposed to the virus again and if the antibodies they produced were sufficient to guard them from reinfection.
Prior to this latest test, Rodda said that employment had been done by her research team, also as others, showing that antibodies against the virus are maintained for a minimum of 3 months.
In her team’s preprint study especially , it had been shown that this happens even in people that have mild symptoms.
Their study also suggested that immunity could last for much longer .
Rodda said they found that folks who recovered from mild COVID-19 had memory B cells and memory T cells “with hallmarks of functionality.”
Memory cells give our system memory of previous microbial invaders, allowing it to possess a quicker, stronger response subsequent time we encounter them.
What this suggests is that if people are reexposed to the virus, these cells, along side antibodies, will likely protect people from symptoms and further transmission.
Immune memory to other diseases, like the measles, can last for several years, Rodda said, so this might be true of COVID-19 also .
